MIDLAND, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University soccer team lost its first match of the weekend, 2-1 to Northwood University at the Midland Soccer Complex on Friday (Oct. 5). The Wildcats fall to 3-7 and 2-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Timberwolves improve to 4-5-1 and 4-2-1 in the conference.
NMU freshman Gabriella Garza scored the Wildcat goal in the 61st minute to cut the Timberwolves lead down to one. The unassisted goal was her second of the season.
It was a scoreless first half before Northwood jumped on the board less than two minutes into the second 45 minutes of play. Alyssa Tomassi scored her first of the game at 46:15 from Amanda Watson. Just under two minutes later, Tomassi earned her second goal with the assist going to Jessica Langer, putting the Timberwolves up 2-0.
The Timberwolves outshot the ‘Cats (12-6), and had more shots on goal (6-2). NMU’s redshirt freshman goalkeeper Shelby Conard had four saves, while Julie Shields, for Northwood, had one.
The ‘Cats continue play downstate against Saginaw Valley State University on Sunday (Oct. 7) at noon from University Center, Mich.
