MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team looks to get back to its winning ways this weekend as the Wildcats travel to Canton, Ohio for two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches. NMU will face Malone University on Friday (Oct. 5) at 7 p.m. and Walsh University on Saturday (Oct. 6) at 2 p.m. in the first all-time meeting with both opponents.
The ‘Cats are 11-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play after getting swept last weekend from Vandament Arena. On Friday night, Wayne State defeated NMU, 3-1. In Saturday’s matchup, the ‘Cats were up 2-0, before Findlay came back for the 3-2 victory.
NMU is hitting a .186 hitting percentage and has 52 (119-67) more service aces than its opponents. Junior Lina Lopes leads the team in kills with 192 on the season while freshman Lisa Studnicka (154) and junior Kalli Herron (152) are close behind. Junior Kellisha Harley has 628 assists on the season and is fourth in the GLIAC with 10.1 assists per set. On the defense side, freshman Alex Berger leads with 230 digs.
Malone is 7-6 overall and 3-4 in the GLIAC after being swept at home over the weekend. On Friday, the Pioneers were defeated by Hillsdale College, 3-1. Malone won the third set and the 10-7 advantage in the fourth set before falling to the Chargers, 25-22. In Saturday’s matchup against Northwood, the Pioneers took the first set 25-23, before falling in the next three. The Timberwolves came away with the 3-1 advantage.
The Walsh Cavaliers are 3-9 overall and 1-6 in the GLIAC after dropping two straight matches. Walsh fell to Northwood on Friday evening in three sets. The Cavaliers kept it close in the first, falling 25-23, but would be defeated 25-14 and 25-17 in the second and third sets. Saturday’s match against Hillsdale, was much the same story. Walsh lost the first set 25-13, came back for a close second match to only lose by two (25-23), but would fall by six in the third (25-19).
