MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving kicked off the season with its annual Green and Gold meet from the PEIF Pool on Saturday (Sept. 29) morning. Gold defeated Green 479-440.

“For the first outing, we looked pretty good,” NMU coach Heidi Voigt said. “I could tell who worked hard this summer and preseason. We are faster right now than we were last year at this time.”

Gold won the first race, the 200 medley relay, and the final race, the 400 freestyle relay

“The 200 medley relay will be an important relay for us and they looked very good,” Voigt said.

Freshman Crystal Bennet led Gold with wins in both the 50 yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke in her first day in the Green and Gold. Sophomore Emily Bourguignon took the 100 freestyle while sophomore Tara Dowling won the 200 freestyle and sophomore Molly Kearney won both the one and three-meter dives.

For green, sophomore Jordan Iverson took the 500 freestyle, sophomore Debbi Lawrence won the 200 IM, sophomore Madisen Sechena won the 100 butterfly and senior Lauren Cockels took the 100 backstroke.

“Jordan Iverson and Tara Dowling stood out today. It was good to see the freshman race and Crystal Bennet, our sprinter from Australia, will be a great addition,” Voigt added.

The Wildcats host Hillsdale College on Oct. 12-13 for their first official meet.
