MARQUETTE, Mich.—United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters put on a strong showing Friday night at the Superior Dome during the Upper Peninsula Weightlifting Championships with eight athletes lifting personal records.
Vanessa McCoy of Wichita Falls, Texas, took home the best female lifter award. McCoy lifted 78 kilograms in the snatch and a personal record of 105 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 183 kg in the 63-kg weight class.
Competing at 94 kg, John McGovern of Pensacola, Fla., received the best male lifter award for his 291 kg total. McGovern’s personal records came with his 131 kg lift in the snatch and 160 kg lift in the clean and jerk.
Other male athletes lifting personal records were Ryan Borges (Bradenton, Fla.) lifting at 69 kg with a total of 219 kg and Chris Young (Oakland, Mich.) in the 85-kg weight class earning a total of 248 kg. Brennan Jaquint’s personal best came in the 105-kg weight class with his 120 kg snatch. Jaquint was unable to clear his lift in the clean and jerk.
Three women also lifted personal records. Holly O’Dovero (Marquette, Mich.) competed at 53 kg, lifting a total of 126 kg. In the 58-kg weight class, Kendra Miller (Plainwell, Mich.) totaled 142 kg and Bree Carlson (Peshtigo, Wis.) cleared 139 kg.
Seven other Northern Michigan University students and USOEC athletes also competed. Lifting at 56 kg was Annie Bengry (Marquette, Mich.) with a total of 90 kg and Rael Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.), who totaled 171 kg in the 75+ category. Lifting at 85 kg were Marc Spurlock (Phoenix, Ill.) and Kyle LaJoye (Marquette, Mich.). Spurlock totaled 240 kg for the night while LaJoye cleared 181 kg. Lifting at 94 kg was Brian Budd (Okemos, Mich.), totaling 210 kg. In the 105-kg weight class, Jeff Everson (Cedar, Mich.) and Andrew Wener (Munising, Mich.) lifted 210 kg and 225 kg, respectively.
Three club members, all of Marquette, Mich., made their debut performances. In the 48-kg weight class, Jaryn Stewart lifted a 59 kg total for the night. Competing at 58 kg were Dinel Stewart and Rachel Snow. They lifted 67 kg and 60 kg, respectively.
Athletes now have their sights set on competitions in Israel and California in November.
