MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team will continue its month on the road with two matches this weekend. The Wildcats will open up Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Saginaw Valley State on Friday (Sept. 14), followed by Lake Superior State on Saturday (Sept. 15).

Friday’s match at SVSU is at 7 p.m. while Saturday’s match at LSSU is set for 2 p.m. The ‘Cats will face the two teams once more each this season at home on Nov. 9 against SVSU and Nov. 10 against LSSU.

NMU enters the weekend 7-2 overall after coming off three victories over the weekend at the Missouri S&T Middle of Everywhere Classic. Coach Dominic Yoder’s squad defeated Emporia State and lost to tournament host Missouri S&T on Friday (Sept. 7). On Saturday (Sept. 8), NMU was victorious over Southern Indiana and Missouri-St. Louis, winning both matches in five sets, 3-2.

SVSU stands at 4-5 on the season. The Cardinals enter the weekend on a three-match win streak after going 3-2 in the St. Joseph’s College Invitational last weekend. The Cardinals were defeated by Winona St. (3-0) and Bellarmine (3-1) on Friday. Their first win of the weekend came on Friday evening against St. Joseph’s as Saginaw won the match 3-0. On Saturday, the Cardinals came away with wins against Edinboro (3-0) and Illinois-Springfield (3-0).

Lake Superior State is coming off of a 1-3 finish at the Grand Valley State University Fall Classic, putting the Lakers at 3-5 overall on the season. LSSU lost the first match of the weekend to Barry (3-1) and came back to win against District of Columbia (3-1). On Saturday, the Lakers lost to Notre Dame College (Ohio) 3-1 and UW-Parkside, 3-0.

For the ‘Cats, junior Lina Lopes and freshman Lisa Studnicka lead the offense with 89 kills each. Junior Kalli Herron has 87 kills while junior Sarah Hamilton has 69. Herron is hitting an attack percentage of 30.1. Junior setter Kellisha Harley has 335 assist and is averaging 9.57 assists per set.

Defensively, freshman Alex Berger leads the team with 139 digs (3.97 per set). Lopes (73) and Studnicka (66) are second and third in the digs category. Hamilton is leading the blocking charge with 34 total blocks on two solo and 32 assisted blocks. Herron has 27 block assists.
