CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a shutout victory at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Monday (Sept. 3). The Wildcats defeated the Eagles 2-0 to move to 1-2 on the season. Crookston is 0-2.

“It was a good team win,” NMU coach Matt Granstrand said. “I’m proud of my team, playing three games in five days.”

Freshman Gabriella Garza scored the first goal of the season for NMU with a blast into the upper left corner of the net only 5:29 into the game. Senior Brekelle Sellers assisted on the goal for her 12th career point.

Freshman Hailey Beyrand scored her first career goal with under a minute to go in the game (89:30) with an unassisted tally to put the game out of reach for the Eagles.

Redshirt freshman Shelby Conard picked up her first career shutout, stopping six shots on the afternoon. She is now 1-2 as the starting goalkeeper. Ashleigh Erdmann stopped six Wildcat shots for Crookston.

“We have a lot of young players who are going to need to step up all season like they did today,” Granstrand added. “We had to play a lot of players with today’s weather and everyone did well.”

The Wildcats next contest is against non-conference opponent Schoolcraft College at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Sept. 8) at the NMU Soccer Field.
