HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan Unviersity cross country team started the 2012 season in dominating fashion on Friday (Aug. 31) afternoon at Michigan Tech. The Wildcats took the first 12 collegiate spots and had a perfect team score with 15 points. Michigan Tech (58), Finlandia (81), Northland and Gogebic also raced.
NMU coach Jenny Ryan was impressed with her team, “We ran great today and it was a lot of fun to watch. It was just an awesome start to the season and you can really see that the team trained hard all summer.”
Junior Mandy Dye led the way with a first place finish 34 seconds ahead of her second place teammate sophomore Olivia Howard. Dye finished the 5-kilometer course in 19:23.3.
“Mandy had an incredible and smart race,” Ryan added. “The team got to run as a group but Mandy separated herself from the pack.”
Freshman Megan Edic (19:58.6) finished third. Also scoring for Northern were sophomore Katie Granquist (20:04.3) and senior Rita Woitas (20:09.2) who finished fourth and fifth.
Freshman Mary Kate Cirelli, junior Jordyn Ross, sophomore Larissa Halonen, freshman Alex Bott, freshman Hannah Boyer and sophomore Chelsea Farquhar also finished in the top 12.
The Wildcats travel to the Midwest Collegiate Opener next weekend (Sept. 8) on the campus of UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.
