MARQUETTE, Mich. – Green topped Gold 3-0 on Tuesday (Aug. 28) in the annual Northern Michigan University volleyball intrasquad match from Vandament Arena. Green won 25-23, 25-16 and 25-13.

Head coach Dominic Yoder helped Eddie Bollman coach the Green squad while Inga Kurgonaite coached Gold.

“We competed hard on both sides of the net tonight,” Yoder said. “It was a good start to the season and helped us get more comfortable with each other and better develop our system, heading into a busy weekend.”

Five Green members had more than five kills. Freshman Lisa Studnicka led the way with nine. Junior Kalli Herron (8), senior Andree Ring (7), junior Sarah Hamilton (7) and junior Lina Lopes (6) led the way on offense. Junior Kellisha Harley had 31 assists from the setting position. Freshman Alex Berg had 15 digs while Lopes chipped in 10 to lead the defense.

Junior Katie Dzedzie led Gold with four kills while senior Bailey Franklin had three. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hoffman had 12 assists. Junior Suzanne Solin had eight digs while Franklin and sophomore Elizabeth Zanone added seven digs each.

“We need to find consistency in our serves and in our offense,” Yoder added. “The defense played pretty well tonight and we were able to get a few blocks at the net.”

Northern opens the regular season this weekend at the Ferris State Tournament. Friday’s (Aug. 31) opponents are Minnesota-Crookston at 9 a.m. and Mercyhurst at 2 p.m. Northern finishes the weekend with West Virginia State at 9 a.m. on Saturday (Sept. 1) and Glenville at 3 p.m.
