MARQUETTE, Mich.—Members of the United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman Wrestling team have returned to Northern Michigan University’s campus to prepare for the University World Team Trials taking place Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The tournament is a long, one-day event and the team has been training for the strenuous conditions by having tournament-style wrestling matches throughout the day. USOEC assistant coach Aghasi Manukyan stressed the importance of being prepared.

“Our training needs to reflect the competition schedule,” Manukyan said. “We must teach them to know how it feels to be tired and still wrestle well.”

Resident athlete Paul Tellgren of Anoka, Minn., is one of seven USOEC wrestlers who won their weight classes at the University National Championships last May. Tellgren is enjoying the practice schedule and he is looking forward to the competition.

“Practicing this way has a European feel,” he said. “It gets the body ready for tough matches. Putting guys on the World Team would be a great way to start our fall semester at Northern.”

The winners of the trials will compete at the University World Championships in Kuortane, Finland, Oct. 2-7.
