Marquette, Mich.– The spirit of the Olympic Movement rolled into Marquette today, as the Olympic Education Center weightlifting team met with members of the Northern Michigan University Wildcat Youth Camp in celebration of Olympic Day.
Team members performed lifting demonstrations and spoke to the day campers about the sport, exercise, eating right and Olympic values such as fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship.
“We are excited to take part in Olympic Day and inspire kids in the local community,” said USOEC Coach Vance Newgard. “Our team is proud to support the Olympic Movement and encourage children to lead healthy, active lives.”
The USOEC activity is one of more than 700 events taking place nationwide between June 22 and July 1. The events are designed to engage youth and promote the ideals of the Olympic movement.
Around the world, more than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration. Olympic Day was created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games.
