Marquette, Mich.—United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestler Paul Tellgren won a silver medal at the Ljubomir Ivanovic Gedza International last Saturday (June 16) in Bellgrade, Serbia.
Tellgren, a Northern Michigan University senior from Anoka, Minn., went 4-1 in the 55-kilogram weight class. After defeating wrestlers from Iraq and Croatia, Tellgren advanced to the championship match with a win over Nikola Markovic of Serbia, 1-0, 1-1. In the finals, Tellgren was defeated by NMU alumnus and two-time Olympian Spenser Mango, 6-0, 2-0.
Mango also competed in the 60-kg weight class, earning bronze by defeating Luis Baiz of Venezuela, 1-0, 3-0.
Three other NMU alumni competed with Mango in preparation for wrestling in the Olympic Games this summer: Justin Lester, Ben Provisor and Chas Betts.
Lester outlasted Valdemar Stajer of Serbia, 3-0, 1-0 in the 74 kg to take home a bronze medal.
Betts earned silver with a win over Goran Bulatovic of Serbia, 1-0, 6-0 at 84 kg.
Provisor also competed in the 84-kg weight class. He finished the competition in fifth place.
Nine teams entered the tournament. Team USA finished second in the team standings with 65 points, behind host Serbia with 108 points. Croatia was third with 41 points.
