MARQUETTE, Mich. – Tae Norwood was named the assistant men’s basketball coach at Northern Michigan University today. Norwood brings 10 years of assistant coaching experience to the Wildcat program.

“Tae’s coaching experience and reputation as one of the top recruiters in NCAA basketball will be a great asset to our program,” NMU head coach Doug Lewis said. “He’s an energetic guy who has a skill set and demeanor about him that is magnetic. I have supreme confidence that he will play an integral part as we continue to grow our program.”

Norwood spent 2011-12 as the assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Grambling (La.) State University.

“Tae’s primary responsibilities include being the recruiting coordinator and working with our guards in terms of skill development,” Lewis added.

From 2009-11, Northwood was the assistant coach at Florida Gulf Coast University (Fort Myers, Fla.). He was the assistant coach at Georgia Southern University (Statesboro, Ga.) in 2008-09 and the assistant at Florida Southern University (Lakeland, Fla.) in 2007-08.

The Brooklyn, N.Y. native spent two years at Bloomsburg (Pa.) University  where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Huskies, as well as interim head coach in the spring of 2006.

Norwood played his college basketball at Green Mountain College (Poultney, Vt.) where he was a four-year letterman from 1996-2000. He led the Eagles to a conference record of 53-4, three Mayflower Conference championships and three NAIA Tournaments. Norwood was a two-time all-conference selection and left as Green Mountain’s career leader in assists and steals.

Norwood’s coaching career began during his playing days at Green Mountain when he served as the boys’ head coach at Poultney Middle School (1997), an assistant varsity coach at Poultney High School (1998) and the girls’ assistant varsity coach at Otter Valley Union High School (2000).

Norwood graduated from Green Mountain in 2000 with a degree in recreation and leisure services, and earned his master’s degree in health and kinesiology from Georgia Southern in 2004. While completing his education at Georgia Southern, he got his first collegiate coaching experience as an administrative assistant. He then spent the 2004-05 season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Milligan College (Johnson City, Tenn.).

In addition to his coaching resume, Norwood has extensive experience in other areas of college athletics, including game and event management and fundraising. He also served as the intramural director at Milligan College and as assistant director for game management at Bloomsburg. Norwood has been the camp director or coordinator at several summer camps, and served as a coach at the Seattle Storm and Supersonics Camp from 1999-2001.

Off the court, Norwood has been active in the Boys and Girls Clubs, part of the “Big Brother” mentorship program, and is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Black Coaches Association.
