MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team returns to the postseason this week after a one-year absence, traveling to No. 5 Ashland University on Feb. 29 for a quarterfinal matchup in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Wildcats enter the tournament as the eighth seed after taking three of their last four regular season games to finish in third place in the north division. Ashland enters the tournament as the one seed after finishing with the best record in conference play.

NMU swept its last two regular season games last week to secure a spot in the tournament. The ‘Cats defeated Northwood, 71-62 on Feb. 23 and bested Saginaw Valley State, 76-61 on Senior Day on Feb. 25. Senior guard Chelsea Lyons led the ‘Cats during the week, averaging 26 points per game, eight rebounds and four assists. Senior forward Hillary Bowling netted a season-high 21 points in the win against SVSU, going 7-for-12 from beyond the arc.

NMU and Ashland met just two weeks ago in Ohio with the Eagles taking an 85-55 contest on Feb. 18. The win was the 24th straight for the Eagles and snapped a three-game losing streak against the ‘Cats.

Ashland enters the matchup on a 25-game winning streak after starting the season 0-1. The Eagles wrapped up a perfect 19-0 campaign in the GLIAC en route to capturing the south division and GLIAC Regular Season Championship.

NMU is 16-7 all-time against Ashland with the series dating back to the 1995-96 season. The ‘Cats have won three of the last four in the series.

The ‘Cats are 22-9 in the GLIAC Tournament, falling to rival Michigan Tech, 73-69, in the championship game in their last appearance in the tournament in 2010. Ashland and NMU last met in the GLIAC Tournament in 2010, with NMU taking a 71-50 contest in a quarterfinal matchup. The ‘Cats are 3-1 against the Eagles in postseason play.

Wednesday's game is set to tipoff at 7 p.m. Fans can listen on 100.3 FM “The Point”, the official radio station of NMU Athletics, as Ryan Beckman will have the call.
