FINDLAY, Ohio – The No. 15-ranked Northern Michigan indoor track and field team finished seventh at the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday (Feb. 25). NMU totaled 43.75 points on the weekend, finishing behind Grand Valley State, Ashland, Findlay, Hillsdale, Saginaw Valley and Tiffin.
The Wildcats broke three school records, had one automatic qualifier for NCAA Nationals and four provisional qualifiers.
“We had a real good day on Saturday,” NMU coach Tom Barnes said. “Just about everybody had a season or personal best this weekend.”
Redshirt freshman Sherice Hewett was named the Women’s Freshman-of-the-Meet along with Leslie Mitchell of Lake Superior State. Hewett was the lone Wildcat to be a conference champion as she won the triple jump, breaking teammate senior Bailey Franklin’s GLIAC record in the triple jump. She jumped 40 feet, 2 inches and qualified for NCAA Nationals. Hewett is also a provisional qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles.
Senior Catherine Angeli finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a school record time of 25.18 seconds. She is a provisional qualifier for Nationals.
Freshman Angelina Howard finished fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.8 seconds. Angeli was two spots back in seventh in the race.
Sophomore Delaney Lovett was fifth in the triple jump. Franklin tied for seventh in the high jump.
Sophomore Mandy Dye, junior Nora Kiilunen and freshman Larissa Halonen finished in spots nine thru 11th in the one mile run. Junior Mallory Celaya finished 10th in the 3,000-meter run. Senior Rachael Williams was 14th in the 800-meter run while sophomore Katie Granquist 16th.
Three Wildcats are heading to NCAA Nationals in Mankato, Minn. in two weeks (March 9-10). Jamie Roberts in the pole vault, Bailey Franklin in the high jump and Sherice Hewett in the triple jump will represent NMU on the National stage. More Wildcats who have reached provisional marks may be selected.
