MARQUETTE, Mich. – Benjamin Hugus of the Northern Michigan University men’s Nordic ski team has been named the January 2012 Student-Athlete Scholar of the Month by the Athletic Council. Hugus was nominated by Dr. Judy Puncochar from the Department of Education.
“Benjamin Hugus is an excellent secondary education student who is just beginning his education coursework,” Puncochar said. “He is an excellent beginning educator and already has shown himself to be deserving of the recognition of NMU athletes who star in academics.”
Hugus, a sophomore, redshirted last year. His top finishes this year are fourth in the 24-kilometer classic at the Noquamenon, 10th in the 10k classic and 13th in the 10k freestyle at the USSA Opener in Ironwood.
The sophomore from Wausau, Wis. is majoring in secondary education. Hugus has signed up to work with Lake Superior Village (LSV) Youth and Family Center students to help LSV students, where he will assist students with their understanding of mathematics homework. He will also visit Nah Tah Wahsh Public School Academy and work directly with Native American students, math and science teachers, and the Potawatomi language and cultural course.
“I predict Ben will be an outstanding representative of the best of NMU’s beginning educators!” Puncochar added. “Ben is often the first person to submit his assignments. He has shown a solid and early grasp of educational theories and teaching for learning as demonstrated by his excellent integration of course information with course concepts.”
