Softball Tournament Benefits Local Special Olympians
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Annual Superior Dome Softball Tournament to Support the Special Olympics was recently held at the Superior Dome during the weekend of Feb. 9-12.
The annual event featured 22 teams from across the Upper and Lower Peninsula as well as teams from Wisconsin playing in a double-elimination format tournament.
“It was a great turnout this year,” event coordinator Candace Sequin said. “All of the spots were filled for the event which made it an impressive showing.”
Each team’s registration fee as well as proceeds from the concessions benefited Special Olympics Area 36.
“We raised about $5,000 for the Special Olympics, with proceeds coming from the entry fees as well as the concessions,” Sequin said.
Athletes from the Special Olympics joined the local Knights of Columbus chapter during the opening ceremonies and had the opportunity to run the bases before and after the games.
“The Special Olympic athletes had the opportunity to partner up with a team for the weekend,” Sequin said. “We had great support from all of the teams in working with the Special Olympic athletes.”
Wilderness Whitetail captured first place and the $1,000 prize. In second place was MCR/Hitmen and in third place was Borski.
