BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The No. 19-ranked Northern Michigan hockey team picked up its first Central Collegiate Hockey Association road series sweep with a 2-0 victory over Bowling Green State on Saturday (Feb. 11). Sophomore goaltender Jared Coreau stopped 31 Falcon shots to earn his first career shutout at BGSU Ice Arena.
With the win, Northern moves into a three-team tie for seventh-place in the conference. NMU is 14-10-6 overall and 9-9-6-3 in the CCHA for 36 points. The ‘Cats are tied with Miami and Notre Dame.
After a scoreless first period, freshman defenseman Mitch Jones scored his fourth goal of the season 4:12 into the second. Junior defenseman Kyle Follmer had his team-leading 19th assist of the season. Sophomore forward Stephan Vigier picked up his third point on the weekend with an assist on the power-play goal.
Coreau stopped 12 shots in the second period and the Wildcats put the nail in the coffin when senior forward Andrew Cherniwchan scored an empty-net goal late in the third. Justin Florek had the assist for his fourth point of the series. Cherniwchan has seven goals this season and also had two points on Friday.
Bowling Green (9-18-5, 4-16-4-3 CCHA) outshot the ‘Cats 31-23 and was 0-for-4 on the power-play.
NMU was 1-for-3 on the man advantage.
Coreau is now 10-5-2 on the season. Andrew Hammond (9-17-5) had 21 saves in net for the Falcons.
Northern hits the road for the final regular season road series of the season next weekend at the University of Michigan. Friday’s game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network and Fox Sports Detroit will air Saturday’s game.
Game Notes: NMU won 4-2 on Friday…The last NMU shutout was at Bemidji State (Nov. 26) last season in a 4-0 win…Cherniwchan has 32 career goals.
