BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The No. 19-ranked Northern Michigan hockey team scored three first-period goals on Friday (Feb. 10) and went on to defeat Bowling Green State 4-2 from BGSU Ice Arena. The Wildcats are now 13-10-6 overall and 8-9-6-3 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Senior forward Justin Florek scored a goal and added two assists for his eighth multiple point game of the season. Senior forward Andrew Cherniwchan and sophomore forward Stephan Vigier each had two points with a goal and an assist while junior forward Matt Thurber had two assists.
Vigier opened the game’s scoring with his 11th of the season only 2:14 into the game. Assists went to Florek and Cherniwchan on the power-play goal.
Cherniwchan scored his sixth of the season at 5:58 of the first. It was an even strength goal but a Falcon had just come out of the penalty box. Florek and Vigier had the assists.
Junior defenseman Scott Macaulay scored a power-play goal at 9:29 of the first to give NMU a 3-0 lead. Thurber and senior forward Tyler Gron assisted on Macaulay’s third of the season.
BGSU (9-17-5, 4-15-4-3 CCHA) cut the lead to two when Bobby Shea scored his fourth of the season 7:40 in the second. Camden Wojtala picked up the helper.
Florek scored his team-leading 15th of the season with less than two minutes left in the second. Thurber assisted on the tally.
The Falcons scored the lone goal in the third period as Cameron Sinclair beat sophomore goaltender Jared Coreau for his fifth goal of the season. Bryce Williamson and Ryan Carpenter assisted on the goal.
Coreau finished the game with 32 saves and is now 9-5-2 on the season.
Andrew Hammond (9-16-5) stopped 23 Wildcat shots.
Northern was 2-for-4 on the man advantage and the Falcons were 0-for-6.
NMU remains in ninth-place in the conference with 33 points. Lake Superior State is in eighth with 38.
The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 11) for the CCHA series finale.
