MARQUETTE, Mich. – After nearly six months of anticipation, the Northern Michigan University Intercollegiate Athletics Department recently held the long-awaited drawing as part of its 2012 fundraiser.
Although the minimum of 3,330 tickets was not sold to raffle off a 2011 Ford Fiesta, a 50/50 drawing was held in its place on Saturday, Feb. 4 during the second intermission of the Wildcats hockey game against Ferris State.
“This is the first time that the department has done a fundraiser like this and it was great to see the community get behind the event,” Interim Athletic Director Steve Reed said. “We’re very pleased with the success of the raffle and we received some very positive feedback from the community.”
Raffle tickets were sold by student-athletes as well as members of the athletic department. Women’s basketball freshman Ashley Berth sold the lucky ticket.
Jerry Tochterman of Green Bay, Wis. was the lucky winner, taking home $8,540.
“It was great to see the willingness of the student-athletes, the parents of those athletes as well as the members of the athletic department,” Reed said. “This fundraiser would not have been a success without them.”
Reed says that with the success of this year’s event that future fundraising efforts look promising.
“We heard some great ideas from the community for future events and we look forward to possibly implementing some of those ideas in upcoming fundraisers,” Reed said.
The Athletic Department would like to thank everyone who purchased a raffle ticket and Fox Motors of Marquette for their support of the event.
