MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan indoor track and field team climbed the rankings from No. 21 to No. 17 this week in the latest USTFCCCA national rankings.
The Wildcats have broken a school record 10 times this season and have one automatic qualifier for NCAA Nationals and five provisional qualifying marks.
Senior Bailey Franklin has broken the high jump mark twice this season and is currently ranked tied for second in the nation. She cleared 5-foot-8 at the GVSU Holiday Open (Dec. 16) and 5-foot-9.25 at the Pointer Invitational (Feb. 4) for an automatic qualifying mark.
Franklin also broke the pentathlon school record and is a provisional qualifier with her 3,339 points she scored at the Pointer Invitational, ranking her 15th nationally.
Freshman Angelina Howard broke the 60-meter dash record twice. She ran 7.76 seconds at Saint Scholastica Opener (Dec. 11) and 7.75 at the Pointer Invitational. She is a provisional qualifier in the event.
Senior Catherine Angeli finished first in the 200-meter with a school record time of 25.26 seconds and a provisional qualifying time at the Pointer Invite. She is ranked 11th in the country in the 200. Angeli also broke the 400-meter record at the GVSU Holiday Open running 57.65 seconds.
Redshirt freshman Sherice Hewitt is a provisional qualifier in the triple jump and she broke the 60-meter hurdles record with a time of 9.11 seconds at the Pointer Invitational. She is ranked ninth in the triple with her jump of 39-foot-0.25 at St. Scholastica.
Sophomore Jamie Roberts has jumped 12-foot-3.5 in the pole vault at the Wisconsin Invitational (Jan. 21), breaking her old school record and qualifying provisionally. She is ranked seventh in the nation.
The 4 x 200 relay team finished first with a school record 1:45.53 at St. Scholastica. The squad consisted of Howard, Hewitt, freshman Samara White and Angeli. The event isn’t a nationally scored event.
The Wildcats travel back to Grand Rapids for the GVSU Big Meet this weekend before hosting their own meets from the Superior Dome on Feb. 17-18.
