MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Northern Michigan men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams opened the 2012 Mayor’s Challenge in prime fashion with strong showings in the classic races on a frigid Saturday (Jan. 21) morning.
Both teams are competing in the first of two consecutive weekends on the Central Grand Prix Super Tour.
The women’s team opened the day up for NMU on the mountain with the 5k classic. Junior Monica Markvardsen continued her strong season with a fifth place finish and a time of 17:59.6. The next four Wildcats all finished back-to-back with sophomore Molly Burger coming in 14th place with a time of 18:48.6. Juniors Libby Ellis and Rosie Frankowski finished in 15th and 16th place with times of 18:48.1 and 18:51.8. Sophomore Jordyn Ross came home in 17th place.
In the men’s 10k classic, freshman Kjell-Christian Markset proved why he’s a prime candidate for an NCAA showing with an eighth place finish at 23:04.1. Sophomore Erik Soderman rounded out the top 15 with a time of 23:22.9. Junior Chris Bowler was the next NMU skier to cross the line, coming home in 21st with a time 23:42.0 and freshman Kyle Bratrud rounded out the top 25 with a 23:51.8 time.
The ‘Cats wrap-up the weekend on Sunday (Jan. 22) with the men’s 15k freestyle and women’s 10k freestyle races.
