ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan track and field team competed in its final meet of 2011 at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open on Friday (Dec. 16). The Wildcats had two more athletes get NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
“We have five provisional qualifiers before Christmas and we’re happy with that,” NMU coach Tom Barnes said. “The rest of the team did great today.”
Senior Bailey Franklin at a provisional qualifying jump of 5-foot-8 to win the high jump. She also finished second in the triple jump to teammate freshman Sherice Hewett who won the event with a jump of 38 feet.
Sophomore Jamie Roberts cleared 11-foot-7.75, finishing third and have a provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault.
Senior Catherine Angeli broke the school record in the 400-meter dash, finishing third. Her new school record time is 57.50.
“It was another good meet for us and it will fire the kids up to work hard over break and come back in January and keep performing well,” Barnes added.
Freshman Angelina Howard finished fourth in the 60-meter dash. Sophomore Kristina Mattson was fourth in the 600 run. Senior Melissa Christensen was fifth in the 60 hurdles and fourth in the long jump.
Freshman Samara White was sixth in the long jump while sophomore Delany Lovett finished fourth in the triple jump and junior Mariah Beaman was seventh in the shot put.
The ‘Cats are off until Jan. 14 when they travel to the Badger Classic at the University of Wisconsin.
