MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team looks to continue its quality play over opposing teams from the Berry Events Center, hosting non-conference and U.P.-rival Michigan Tech at 7:35 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 16) in the first of two meetings on the season.
The Wildcats are 3-1 on the season against Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams and are unbeaten in 9-of-10 games this season at home. The ‘Cats will travel to Houghton for the second game on Jan. 21.
Fans are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to the game to toss onto the ice during the first intermission for the Teddy Bear Toss. All stuffed animals will go to the Marine Toys of Tots foundation and will be redistributed to less fortunate children in the area.
Michigan Tech is 9-8-1 overall and 6-7-1 in the WCHA. The Huskies started the season on a four-game winning streak. Coach Mel Pearson is in his first season with MTU after 23 years as an assistant at the University of Michigan. The Huskies are 4-6 in their last 10 games.
Northern (8-7-3, 5-6-3-2 CCHA) holds a 63-48-13 all-time series record over MTU, dating back to 1979. The ‘Cats hold the 34-19-5 edge over the Huskies in Marquette and in the last 10 meetings NMU is 4-4-3 against MTU.
NMU was 1-1-1 with the Huskies last season. MTU won the first game of the season at the Berry Events Season 4-3 on Oct. 8. The two teams met four days later in Houghton, tying 4-4. NMU defeated the Huskies 6-2 in Marquette on Dec. 17.
