DULUTH, Minn. – The Northern Michigan indoor track and field team got its season underway Saturday (Dec. 10) afternoon at the Saint Scholastica Opener. Team scores weren’t kept but the Wildcats broke two school records had an NCAA provisional qualifying jump.
“Everyone did really well,” NMU coach Tom Barnes said. “We’re really happy to have a provisional qualifier and it’s a good start to the season.”
Freshman Sherice Hewitt won the triple jump with a provisional qualifying jump of 39-00.25. Senior Bailey Franklin was third and sophomore Delaney Lovett was fourth.
Freshman Angelina Howard set a new school record in the 60-meter dash, running a 7.76. The time was .01 seconds off of a provisional qualifying mark. She won the event with freshman Samara White coming in second.
The 4 x 200 relay team finished first with a school record 1:45.53. The squad consisted of Howard, Hewitt, White and senior Catherine Angeli.
Angeli and Howard finished first and second in the 200-meter dash. Angeli’s time of 25.60 was .05 seconds off of a provisional qualifying mark
White won the long jump and sophomore Katie Searles was fifth. Hewitt was second in the 60 hurdles while senior Melissa Christensen was fifth. Junior Mariah Beaman was fourth in the shot put.
Junior Colby West and sophomore Sydney Schultz finished second and third in the 300. Sophomore Kristina Mattson finished third in the 600.
The ‘Cats travel to the Grand Valley State Holiday Open next Saturday (Dec. 16).
