Men's Basketball Wins Second Straight
MARQUETTE, Mich. – A career afternoon by freshman guard Haki Stampley paced the Northern Michigan men’s basketball team, as the Wildcats defeated Ohio Dominican University 81-69 on Saturday (Dec. 10) at the Berry Events Center.
With the win, NMU improves to 4-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while ODU falls to 2-6 and 0-4 in the GLIAC.
The ‘Cats took an early 12-7 lead at the 15:22 mark of the first half from a layup from senior guard DeAndre Taylor. After fending off two rallies from the Panthers, NMU took a six-point, 34-28 lead into intermission with a jump shot from freshman guard Haki Stampley.
NMU stretched its lead to nine points to start the second half before ODU trimmed the lead to just four-points at the 14:03 mark. The ‘Cats responded and went on to take a double-digit lead, never leading by less than seven points.
The ‘Cats were led by freshman guard Haki Stampley with 29 points and four steals. Senior guard DeAndre Taylor also netted 18 points and 10 rebounds, while senior center Jared Benson chipped in 17 points and seven boards.
The Panthers were led by Aaron Gibbs with 20 points and six rebounds.
The ‘Cats shot 89.7 percent (35-39) from the charity stripe including 93.5 percent (29-31) in the second half.
NMU shot 43.8 percent (21-48) from the field and 30.8 percent (2-13) from beyond the arc and the ‘Cats won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Panthers 40-32.
NMU is off for the week before traveling to Grand Valley State on Dec. 18. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
