MARQUETTE, Mich. – Two Northern Michigan forwards had two goals each to lead the Wildcats to a 5-1 victory over No. 18 Miami on Saturday (Dec. 3) night to complete the Central Collegiate Hockey Association sweep of the RedHawks.

“We knew tonight Miami was going to be a much better team,” NMU coach Walt Kyle said. “They came out early and we were able to weather that storm and recollect ourselves. I give a lot of credit to the leadership on our team.”

With the win, NMU is now 7-6-3 overall and 4-5-3-2 in the CCHA. The ‘Cats are unbeaten in 10-of-11 games at the Berry Events Center where they are 6-1-3.

Three NMU goals on the evening were on the two-man advantage power-play.

Sophomore forward Stephan Vigier scored two goals for the third time this season. He scored the first goal of the game 7:42 into the first period. He also scored the fifth and final goal at 12:36 in the third on the power-play.

Senior forward Justin Florek also had two power-play goals. He scored the first at 12:36 of the first. Florek’s second goal came 48 seconds into the third period.

Redshirt freshman Reed Seckel scored the other Wildcat goal for his third of the season.

Miami’s (8-8-2, 4-6-2-1 CCHA) lone goal came short-handed nine seconds after Florek’s first goal at 12:45 of the second as forward Austin Czarnik scored his sixth of the season.

Northern freshmen forwards DJ Vandercook and Ryan Daugherty picked up the first points of their careers with assists on Vigier first period goal.

Senior forward Tyler Gron had three assists on the night and defenseman juniors Kyle Follmer and Scott Macaulay and freshman Mitch Jones also had an assist each.

The RedHawks took 13 penalties for 39 minutes. NMU was 3-for-12 on the power-play. The ‘Cats took seven penalties for 25 minutes. Miami was 0-for-4 on the power-play.

Senior goaltender Reid Ellingson had 28 saves for his fourth win of the season (4-5-2). Cody Reichard had 22 saves for the RedHawks.

Florek leads the ‘Cats with nine goals on the season and Vigier is right behind him with eight.

NMU travels across the Upper Peninsula next weekend to play Lake Superior State in a CCHA series. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 9) and Saturday (Dec. 10) nights.

Game Notes:  NMU won 2-1 on Friday night…The last time NMU swept a home series was Jan. 21-22, 2011, sweeping Ferris State…It was the third time this year that NMU took less penalties than its opponent…Vigier has 11 career goals…Florek has 44 career goals…NMU is 33-19-3 vs. Miami in Marquette.
