Women's Basketball Set to Open GLIAC Play
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team will travel north this weekend to Houghton to face rival No. 8 Michigan Tech to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
The Wildcats (3-3) are fresh off of a 56-50 victory over NAIA II No. 7 Davenport University on Monday (Nov. 28). Freshman guard Alyssa Colla tied a career high with 12 points as NMU snapped the Panthers 31-game home winning streak. The ‘Cats win was also the first by a non-conference opponent at the DU Student Center.
MTU enters the contest at 4-1, with its only blemish being a 79-52 loss to the University of Indianapolis. The Huskies recently captured the Concordia-St. Paul Tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend with wins over Minnesota Crookston and host Concordia-St. Paul.
The Huskies are led by junior guard Sam Hoyt. The junior leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per contest. MTU is coached by Kim Cameron. Now in her second season, she became the first head coach in MTU history to lead the Huskies to a national championship game appearance.
NMU leads the all-time series 47-35 with the series dating back to the 1975-76 season. MTU has won 17 of the last 20 meetings, though NMU is 24-18 all-time in Houghton. The defending national runners-up swept the season series last year 2-0.
