MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan hockey team hosts No. 18 Miami for a pair of Central Collegiate Hockey Association games at the Berry Events Center. The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 2) and Saturday (Dec. 3) night.
The 'Cats are 5-6-3 overall and 2-5-3-2 in the CCHA. NMU enters the weekend after a split with Michigan State on Nov. 18-19. The Spartans won 4-2 on Friday and the Wildcats bounced back with a 2-1 win on Saturday.
Miami is 8-6-2 overall and 4-4-2-1 in the CCHA. The RedHawks are currently on an 8-game unbeaten streak. The last time Miami lost was on Oct. 28 against Lake Superior State. Last weekend, the RedHawks won the Denver Cup with wins over Providence (6-2) on Friday (Nov. 25) and Denver (4-2) on Saturday (Nov. 26).
NMU leads the all time-series 31-19-3, including at 19-7-1 record in Marquette dating back to 1978. The last time the two teams faced each other was Oct. 22-23, 2010 when the RedHawks swept the series in Oxford, outscoring the 'Cats 13-1 in the series. Miami won 4-0 on Friday, scoring three power-play goals. On Saturday, NMU fell 9-1.
Senior forward Justin Florek and junior defenseman Kyle Follmer are the only Wildcats to score against Miami each with two goals. Florek has played in nine games against the RedHawks, while Follmer has appeared in four.
Defensemen Follmer, sophomore Wade Epp and junior Scott Macaulay must serve a 1-game suspension on Friday night after their involvement in a fight at the end of the Saturday night game against Michigan State.
The Wildcats are unbeaten in 7-of-8 games from the Berry Events Center this season. They have outscored opponents 23-28 at home. The home schedule opened with a non-conference sweep of St. Cloud (Oct. 14-15). NMU defeated Michigan on Friday (Oct. 21) and tied on Saturday (Oct. 22) in the first CCHA home series and NMU had two ties with Notre Dame (Nov. 4-5). A Friday (Nov. 18) loss to Michigan State was the first home loss of the season.
The Blueline Club will host a weekend warm-up at UpFront and Company at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday (Dec. 1). There will also be a fourth period reception at Vango's following Saturday night's game sponsored by Matthews Floor Fashions.
