MIDLAND, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team completed the weekend sweep, defeating Urbana University 78-55 on Saturday (Nov. 19) to close out the Northwood Classic.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Blue Knights fall to 1-3.
Both teams traded points early on in the first half before NMU broke free and took control of the game with a 23-13 lead at the 10:04 mark.
NMU took a 14 point, 42-28 lead into the half.
The ‘Cats continued to work on increasing their lead in the second half, not allowing the Blue Knights to get within closer than 15 points.
Senior guard Chelsea Lyons led all scorers with 16 points and six rebounds. Lyons was a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe. Freshman center Courtney Lemon completed a successful weekend with 12 points and five rebounds, while sophomore forward Katie Becker netted 11 points.
Both Lyons and Lemons earned all-tournament honors.
The Blue Knights were led by Ciara Geiger with 11 points.
The ‘Cats shot 42.4 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from beyond the arc.
NMU out-rebounded Urbana 44-38 and forced 15 turnovers on seven team steals.
The ‘Cats also took advantage of the Blue Knights turnovers, scoring 20 points off of Urbana mistakes.
The NMU bench played a key role in the weekend sweep, contributing 66 total points across the two days, including 30 points against Urbana.
NMU remains on the road, traveling to the University of Indianapolis Tournament next weekend. The ‘Cats face Marian (Ind.) on (Nov. 25) and Indianapolis (Nov. 26).
