MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Northwood to take part in the Northwood Classic this weekend (Nov. 18-19).
The Wildcats (0-1) are coming off of tough loss last weekend in their home opener against Minnesota-Duluth. A late rally by NMU fell short, as UMD defeated the ‘Cats 63-60 at the Berry Events Center.
Senior guard Chelsea Lyons led all scorers with 17 points, eight rebounds and two steals against UMD. Freshman guard Alyssa Colla netted 12 points and five rebounds in her first collegiate start.
NMU opens the weekend against Alma College at 8 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 18). The Scots (0-1) come into the game following a loss to Lake Superior State (68-53) on Nov. 15. Alma is led by sophomore forward Sarah Stinson. The sophomore scored 13 points in the loss to the Lakers. The Scots are coached by Keisha Brown. Now in her third season, Brown has a 9-44 record at Alma.
The ‘Cats are 1-0 all-time against the Scots, with the two teams meeting last in 1992-93.
NMU concludes the tournament against Urbana University at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 19). The Blue Knights (1-1) are coming off an 83-54 loss to Walsh University after a season opening win over Pittsburgh-Johnstown. Urbana is led by junior center Andrea Vogel. The junior is averaging 14.5 points per game. The Blue Knights are coached by first year head coach Tray Huntsman.
Saturday’s meeting is the first between the two schools.
