Wrestlers Place in New York

MARQUETTE– The U.S. Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman and freestyle team earned a silver and three bronze medals at the New York Athletic Club International last weekend (Nov. 11-13) in New York, N.Y.

Northern Michigan University sophomore Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.) placed second overall, losing the 55 kilogram championship match to Jermaine Hodge 3-0, 1-0.

Junior Josh Castellano (Wood Dale, Ill.) and sophomore Kendrick Sanders were third at 66 kg and 74 kg, respectively.

“The wrestler’s competed well and received some more exposure,” said Coach Rob Hermann. “This was the first tournament of the year for some and is a good gage for what they need to do before Nationals.”

For the freestyle team, freshman Jenna Burkert (Rocky Point, N.Y.) defeated teammate sophomore Melissa Apodaca (Chugiak, Alaska) for third place at the 59 kg weight class, 6-0, 0-3, 3-0.  Burkert finished with a 3-1 overall record.
