COLUMBUS, Ohio. – The No. 14 Northern Michigan hockey team lost its second game in a row with a 4-1 defeat to the Ohio State Buckeyes at Value City Arena on Saturday (Nov. 12) night. NMU is now 4-5-3 overall and 1-4-3-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
The lone Wildcat goal came from freshman forward Dylan Walchuk as he scored his second of the season 3:12 into the third period. Sophomore forward Reed Seckel picked up his third assist of the season on the goal.
OSU (8-3-1, 5-2-1-1 CCHA) remained unbeaten in its seventh consecutive game. The Buckeyes are also on a 5-game win streak.
Danny Dries scored in the first period and Nick Oddo added a goal in the second. Both goals were even strength goals on NMU senior goaltender Reid Ellingson.
NMU coach Walt Kyle replaced Ellingson with sophomore Jared Coreau.
The Buckeyes scored a power-play goal by Curtis Gedig a minute after Walchuk’s goal and added their final tally by Alex Lippincott 7:06 into the third.
Ellingson finished the game with 19 saves and Coreau had 15.
Buckeye goaltender Cal Heeter had 18 saves.
The ‘Cats were 0-for-2 on the power-play while the Buckeyes were 1-for-4.
Northern hosts Michigan State from the Berry Events Center next weekend for its final series before a Thanksgiving break. Faceoff is set for 7:35 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 18) and Saturday (Nov. 19).
