MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan head men’s basketball coach Doug Lewis signed two high school seniors to join his squad for the 2012-13 season. Matthew Iverson and Stephen Pelkofer signed national letters of intent to attend NMU and play basketball for the Wildcats.
“We have signed two of the top 50 high school players in the state of Wisconsin,” Lewis said. “We have hit home runs with our two recruiting classes and the future is bright for NMU men’s basketball.”
Iverson is a 6-10 center from Woodruff, Wis. He is ranked 23rd in the state by WisSports.net and plays at Lakeland High School. He was named first team all-conference in the Great Northern Conference after averaging a double-double, with 11.9 points and 10 rebounds, during his junior year.
“His potential is unlimited and he’s only going to get better,” Lewis said about Iverson. “Matthew is a mobile and versatile big man who can score in the lane or step outside and make perimeter jump shots. He does a good job of running the floor and in our up-tempo style of play it’s important we recruit big guys who can run.”
Pelkofer is a 6-2 guard from Milwaukee, Wis. He is ranked No. 44 in Wisconsin and attends Whitnall High School. Pelkofer was named the player of the year in the Black Division of the Woodland Conference, after averaging 17.2 points per game and 3.5 rebounds, during his junior season.
“Stephan’s a high-energy and extremely competitive guard who can play both guard positions,” Lewis added. “It’s hard to find guys like him these days. He’s a talented, skilled player who will always be in the gym working on his game. Stephan is athletic and plays above the rim. Wildcat fans are in for a treat once he puts on a NMU uniform.”
“In my first year at NMU, I wanted to evaluate the talent I inherited,” Lewis said about his second recruiting class. “We had to upgrade the talent on this roster and find guys who were capable of helping us win GLIAC Championships as well as get it done in the classroom. Wildcat fans will be excited with these recruits.”
