Wildcats Defeated at Saginaw Valley
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Northern Michigan football team completed its road portion of the 2011 schedule with a 48-26 loss to Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Nov. 5) evening from Wickes Stadium. NMU is now 4-6 overall and 3-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Junior kicker Rockne Belmonte made four field goals for the Wildcats. He had kicks of 40 and 21 yards in the first quarter. Belmonte added a 35-yarder in the second and a 41-yarder in the fourth quarter.
Saginaw Valley (7-2, 7-2 GLIAC) scored 34 points in the first half. Two of the three touchdowns came on interception returns. Ronnie Lark also added a 10-yard reception for a touchdown and the Cardinals kicker Scott Stanford had a 24-yard field goal.
SVSU scored the first points of the second half on a 13-yard reception from Jonathon Jennings to Jeff Janis. Tim Hogue also added a touchdown after a 51-yard run.
Junior Jared Buss scored on a 4-yard reception from senior quarterback Carter Kopach for NMU’s first touchdown of the game.
Kopach scored on a 3-yard run late in the third quarter.
NMU finished with 309 yards of total offense (119 rushing and 190 passing). The ‘Cats were 3-for-13 on third down and 5-for-5 in the redzone.
Junior running back Prince Young had his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season, finishing with 124 yards on 36 carries. Kopach was 16-of-31 for 190 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Redshirt freshman Julian Gaines led the receivers with five catches for 92 yards.
Sophomore defensive back Brandon Parson led the team with seven total tackles. Senior linebacker Demitri Stewart had six tackles and a sack, while senior lineman Matt Forward and senior linebacker Robert Edmonds also had six tackles.
Senior Brennan VanEffen had 150 yards on kickoff returns. Junior punter Garrett Peck had six punts for 233 yards (38.8 yard average).
Northern plays its final game of the season next Saturday (Nov. 12) at the Superior Dome against Michigan Tech for the rights to the Miners Cup. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
