Volleyball Sweeps Findlay on Senior Day
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan volleyball team sent out its seniors in winning fashion today (Nov. 5), sweeping Findlay 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-17) at Vandament Arena.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 15-12 overall and 12-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and snapped Findlay’s nine-match winning streak. The Oilers fall to 12-14 overall and 8-10 in the GLIAC.
“Players like Jasmine Calhoun and Kalli Herron have really stepped up recently and have been a big part of our wins,” said head coach Dominic Yoder.
The ‘Cats opened the match and first set in aggressive fashion, taking a 10-1 lead. The Oilers struggled to cut into the large NMU lead as the ‘Cats cruised to take the first set.
The second set saw a back-and-fourth style of play, as the two squads traded points throughout. Findlay took a late lead at 22-21, but NMU was able to fight and take the set.
After an early 4-4 tie to start the third set, the ‘Cats took control of the set behind a strong service performance from junior Sami Vierk. The junior served six straight points for NMU, collecting one service ace and helping the ‘Cats to take a 9-5 lead. The ‘Cats never looked back from there, as junior Kalin Zimmerman and senior Becca Feuerherd combined for four service aces down the stretch, as NMU took the set and match.
“Our service game was really on-point tonight,” said Yoder. “We served aggressive and it showed.”
NMU had 12 service aces and only two service receiving errors for the match.
The ‘Cats were led offensively by senior left side hitter Emma Wolfe. The senior contributed 13 kills and hit .423 on the match. Junior setter Abby Lovell established the offensive threat with 31 assists.
Defensively, sophomore left side hitter Lina Lopes led the defensive front with 10 digs.
“We had the right kind of energy today and hopefully we can carry that into tomorrow’s match against Hillsdale,” said Yoder.
