Volleyball Falls in Five to Wayne State
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan volleyball team was unable to overcome late Wayne State rallies, falling to the Warriors 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 9-15) at Vandament Arena today (Nov. 4).
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 14-12 overall and 11-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Warriors improve to .500 at 13-13 overall and 9-9 in the GLIAC.
WSU came into today’s match with its back against the wall and battling for a spot in next week’s GLIAC tournament.
NMU opened the first set trailing early before taking a comfortable lead at 16-11. WSU fired back after a timeout, taking eight straight points to take a 20-17 lead. The ‘Cats held strong however and took the match lead.
The Warriors took a back-and-fourth second set, breaking away from the ‘Cats, after consecutive attack errors from Lina Lopes and Kalli Herron respectively handed WSU set point.
After the break, the ‘Cats found themselves in the midst of another back-and-fourth set. Trailing 21-20 late down the stretch, NMU took three consecutive points to take a 23-21 lead and never looked back, taking the set and a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.
WSU took a commanding fourth set lead at 17-12 and looked in prime position to even up the match. With their backs against the wall, the ‘Cats stormed back to take a 21-20 lead and appeared primed to take the match. However, the Warriors rallied off five unanswered points to take the fourth set.
The Warriors controlled the entire fifth and final set, as ball handling errors and service return errors proved costly for the ‘Cats.
NMU was led offensively by sophomore left side hitter Kalli Herron. She matched a career best with 14 kills. Junior setter Abby Lovell established the offensive threat with 44 assists.
Defensively, junior libero Kalin Zimmerman held the defensive front with 21 digs.
Match Notes: NMU had a season high 40 attack errors…Junior middle hitter Jasmine Calhoun contributed a career-high 7 total blocks (1 solo, 6 assist)…Tonight’s attendance was 291.
