Hockey Defeated by Western Michigan
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The No. 14 Northern Michigan hockey team was defeated 4-2 by No. 7 Western Michigan on Friday (Oct. 28) evening from Lawson Arena. Sophomore forward Stephan Vigier scored both goals for the Wildcats in the first road Central Collegiate Hockey Association game for NMU.
NMU (4-2-1, 1-1-1-0 CCHA) was down 3-1 before Vigier scored his second of the game on the power-play to bring the ‘Cats to within one goal early in the third period (5:40).
Northern generated eight shots on goal in the third but Bronco goaltender Frank Slubowski kept the pucks out of the net. Trevor Elias scored an empty-net goal with 66 seconds left to cap off the Western Michigan victory.
Western (4-0-3, 2-0-1-1 CCHA) scored the first two goals of the game. Elias scored his first of the season 3:19 into the game. Dane Walters scored his first of two goals of the night seven minutes later (10:02).
Vigier scored the only goal of the second period. He buried it behind Slubowski 26 ticks into the second frame with the assist going to senior forward Andrew Cherniwchan.
Walters scored his second of the game on the power-play 36 seconds into the third period.
Vigier’s third period goal was his third of the season and sixth of his career. Junior forward Matt Thurber assisted on the goal.
The Broncos outshot the ‘Cats 33-14. Senior goaltender Reid Ellingson had 29 saves. Sluwboski finished with 12 saves.
The ‘Cats had six penalties for 23 minutes while the Broncos had two penalties for four minutes. NMU was 1-for-2 on the power-play while WMU was 1-for-6.
The two teams faceoff at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 29) for the series finale. The game can be heard on 100.3 FM “The Point”, the official radio voice of the NMU Wildcats.
