BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -The Northern Michigan volleyball team dropped its fifth straight match this afternoon (Oct. 23), falling to No. 13 Ferris State 3-1 (19-25, 18-25, 25-21, 21-25).
With the loss, the ‘Cats fall to 12-11 overall and 9-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs improve to 19-2 overall and 13-1 in the GLIAC. With the loss, NMU remains in third place in the GLIAC north and splits its two regular season contests against FSU.
The ‘Cats opened the first set trailing early 11-3, with attack errors proving costly early on. NMU was able to rebound and get within four points at 16-12 at the midway point but continued to commit errors, preventing the ‘Cats from getting any closer.
NMU played strong throughout the early stages of the second set, leading 9-8 before FSU fired back with seven straight points to take a sizable 15-9 lead. The ‘Cats were unable to make a cut in the lead as a strong offensive performance by the Bulldogs Ashley Huntey kept NMU at bay.
NMU came out of the break for the second straight afternoon looking to prevent a sweep. The ‘Cats were successful again, keeping toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs and preventing a FSU lead from getting out of hand. Trailing 20-19, two consecutive attack errors by the Bulldogs allowed the ‘Cats to take the lead for good, winning six of the next seven points.
The fourth and final set was played once again in a back-and-fourth style, this time favoring FSU. Both teams remained tied up until the near end when the Bulldogs broke a 21-21 tie after a FSU timeout. Three straight offensive errors by the ‘Cats handed the set and match to the Bulldogs.
Offensively, three ‘Cats (Herron, Vierk and Wolfe) collected 12 kills. Junior setter Abby Lovell established the offensive front with 41 assists.
NMU was led defensively by junior libero Kalin Zimmerman with 23 digs.
Errors continue to plague the ‘Cats as of late, as they committed 30 attack errors and nine service errors.
NMU returns home for the remainder of the regular season, facing Lake Superior State at 7 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 28) at Vandament Arena.
