MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Northern Michigan swimming and diving team traveled to Minnesota to compete against Minnesota-Moorhead and St. Cloud State on Friday (Oct. 21) and Saturday (Oct. 22). The Wildcats defeated Moorhead both days but were defeated by St. Cloud.
“It was a battle all weekend,” NMU coach Heidi Voigt said. “The girls swam well.”
The Wildcats set three pool records on the weekend. On Friday, freshman Emily Brennan set the 400 individual medley record (4:38.99) and junior Olga Budiansky set the 200 breaststroke record (2:21.06). Saturday, freshman Debbi Lawrence set a new pool record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:13.23.
“Debbi had a really good day on Saturday,” Voigt said. “Her three first-place finishes and the pool record were so fun to watch.”
Lawrence finished first in the 200 IM and also had first-place finishes in the 100 freestyle, the 200 freestyle and was on the 200 freestyle relay team that won both Friday and Saturday. Her 400 medley relay team won on Friday.
The 200 relay team also had freshman Emily Bourguignon, sophomore Kelsey Sipple and junior Lauren Cockels. Members of the 400 medley relay squad along with Lawrence were senior Gabby Alzaga, Budiansky, freshman Madisen Sechena.
Lawrence was also second in the 50 freestyle to round on the weekend.
Other Friday highlights included Brennan winning the 500 freestyle with freshman Tara Dowling coming in second, Jordan Iverson’s second-place finish in the 1650 freestyle, Sipple’s third in the 50 freestyle, Sechena’s third in the 400 IM and 200 butterfly and Cockels’ fourth in the 100 freestyle. Alzaga and Bourguignon finished second and third in the 200 backstroke while Bourguignon and Dowling finished second and third behind Lawrence in the 200 freestyle.
Saturday, Brennan won the 200 and 500 freestyle with Bourguignon in second in the 200 and Iverson second in the 500. Alzaga and Cockels finished second and third in the 50 backstroke. Alzaga also finished second in the 100 backstroke.
Budiansky was second in the 100 and 50 breaststroke and freshman Aspen McHugh was fourth in the 50. Sechena was fourth in the 100 and 50 butterfly.
NMU travels to Grand Valley State on Nov. 12 and Hillsdale on Nov. 13 to begin competition against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents.
