MARQUETTE, Mich. -- After splitting its home series last week, the Northern Michigan University soccer team will once again host two games this weekend. The ‘Cats will host Saginaw Valley State and Northwood University.
Last week, NMU was shut out by Grand Valley State University, 5-0 on Friday (Oct. 14), but was able to bounce back on Sunday (Oct. 16) to defeat Ferris State, 1-0. The ‘Cats are 8-4-2 overall and 6-4-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and are second place in the north division.
The weekend will be kicked off as the ‘Cats take on SVSU at 4 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 21). The Cardinals are currently two spots behind NMU in the GLIAC north division and are in fourth place with a record of 5-6-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the GLIAC. SVSU faced Lake Erie and Ashland this past weekend. The Cardinals defeated Lake Erie 1-0 on Friday (Oct. 14) and tied with Ashland in overtime, 0-0 on Sunday (Oct. 16).
The last time the two teams met, NMU defeated SVSU 2-1 in double overtime in University Center.
NMU will conclude the weekend against Northwood at noon on Sunday (Oct. 23). Northwood is 5-8 overall and 4-8 in conference play. The Timberwolves split this past weekend as they too traveled to Ashland and Lake Erie. Northwood started the weekend with a 3-0 loss to Ashland on Friday (Oct. 14) and defeated Lake Erie, 2-0 on Sunday (Oct. 16).
After this weekend, the ‘Cats will have one more game left for the 2011 regular season. That game will take place at home against Michigan Tech on October 28.
