Aurora, Ill. – The No. 25 Northern Michigan volleyball team was swept by No. 12 Northern Kentucky this afternoon (Oct. 15) 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) to conclude the Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crossover.
With the loss, the ‘Cats fall to 12-8 overall and finish the weekend at 1-2. The Norse improve to 18-2 overall and were a perfect 3-0 on the weekend.
The Norse opened the match with an early 13-9 lead before the ‘Cats were able to bounce back and cut the lead to one thanks to an attack error by NKU. The ‘Cats were unable to take the lead due to consecutive attack errors from Kalli Herron and Lina Lopes. Service and set errors also proved costly in the opening set, lending to the lead that NKU was able to mount down the stretch.
NMU played strong throughout the second set, playing catch up with the Norse yet staying within striking distance. The ‘Cats trailed by just one, 16-15 but attack errors got the best of NMU again, preventing the ‘Cats from taking the lead.
The Norse led the entire way of the third set, establishing an early 18-9 lead before NMU tried to recover. A strong service game from Becca Feuerherd led the ‘Cats back to within five at 20-15, but that was as close as NMU would get during the remainder of the set.
Offensively, senior left-side hitter Emma Wolfe led the ‘Cats with nine kills and one block. Junior setter Abby Lovell established the offensive front with 28 assists.
NMU was led defensively by sophomore defensive specialist Kristin Wetzel with four digs.
Errors proved costly for the ‘Cats, as they committed 17 attack errors and eight service errors.
