MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan hockey team plays its home-opening series at the Berry Events Center this weekend as the Wildcats host non-conference opponent St. Cloud State. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 14) and Saturday (Oct. 15) nights.
NMU is 1-1 after splitting at No. 17 Wisconsin last weekend. The ‘Cats won 3-2 in overtime on Friday night and lost 3-2 on Saturday. Northern was up 2-0 in both games before Wisconsin came back.
Senior forward Justin Florek scored three goals in Wisconsin over the weekend. He had a pair of power-play goals on Saturday (Oct. 8). Sophomore forward Reed Seckel scored the game-winner in overtime on Friday. Junior forward Kory Kaunisto also scored for the ‘Cats over the weekend.
St. Cloud is 1-1 after a pair of games at the Kendall Hockey Classic in Anchorage, Alaska. The Huskies defeated Alaska-Fairbanks (4-1) on Friday night and lost to Alaska Anchorage (4-3 OT) on Saturday.
St. Cloud leads the all-time series 21-15-1. NMU leads the series in Marquette 12-6. The teams split in the last series played in Marquette on home-opening weekend in Oct. 2005. NMU is 2-8 in the last 10 meetings and 6-4 in its last 10 home-openers.
The last time the two teams met was in the NCAA Regional in 2010 at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. St. Cloud won 4-3 in double overtime. Florek scored a goal and had an assist in the game while Scott Macualay, Tyler Gron, Andrew Cherniwchan and Kyle Follmer also saw action.
