MARQUETTE, Mich. -After being on the road last weekend, the Northern Michigan University soccer team will host two home games this weekend against Grand Valley State and Ferris State. The ‘Cats will play the remainder of their regular season schedule at home.
NMU lost 1-0 to Findlay last Friday (Oct. 7), but were able to get the split on the weekend after defeating Tiffin University 5-2 on Sunday (Oct. 9). The ‘Cats are 7-3-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and third place in the northern division.
NMU will kick off the weekend as they host No. 3 Grand Valley State at 4 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 14). The Lakers currently are in first place in the GLIAC with an 11-0-2 overall record and a 10-0 record in the conference. Coach David DiIanni’s team enters the weekend after two shut out wins against Northwood and Saginaw Valley State University last weekend. The Lakers defeated Northwood 4-0 on Friday (Oct. 7) and SVSU (Oct. 9).
Leading the way for GVSU is Ashley Botts. The junior forward leads the GLIAC with points and points per game with 29 and an average of 2.23. She also has 13 goals on the season, averaging 1.00 per game. Behind Botts is Kayla Addison. Addison has eight goals on the season with 18 points and 50 shots for a shot percentage of .160.
The ‘Cats will conclude the weekend against Ferris State at noon on Sunday (Oct. 16). Similar to GVSU, the Bulldogs also come into the matchup after two shut outs against SVSU and Northwood. Ferris took both games with 1-0 victories. The Bulldogs are 6-2-2 overall, and 6-5-2 in the GLIAC, and ranked second, just behind GVSU and one spot ahead of NMU.
Senior Bri Borgman leads the way for Ferris. Borgman has five goals with 12 points on the season and 28 shots for a shot on goal percent of .536. Goalie Rachel McCollum has also been successful for the Bulldogs this season. The sophomore from Grand Blanc, Mich. has 65 saves for the season for a save percentage of .883.
