TIFFIN, Ohio –After a disappointing loss to Findlay on Friday to open the weekend, the Northern Michigan soccer team’s offense exploded in a 5-2 win over Tiffin University this afternoon (Oct. 9).
With the win, the ‘Cats improve to 7-3-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Dragons fall to 7-4-2 and 6-2-1 in the GLIAC.
Tiffin entered the match in first place of the GLIAC south division, making the win even that more important for the ‘Cats.
The Dragons got on the board first, with a deflected shot by Shelly Rogers at the 3:34 mark in the first half.
The ‘Cats responded nine minutes later with a goal by Tevun Sellers, her first of two on the afternoon. Minutes later, KC McCary used a free kick to find the back of the net for her second goal of the season and put the ‘Cats ahead.
NMU took a 3-1 lead into the break after a Nicole Musi goal at the 40 minute mark. The goal was Musi’s second of the season.
Brekelle Sellers joined her sister in the scoring column at the 74th minute of the second half for her first goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Tevun Sellers found the back of the net for the second time, putting a cap on the NMU scoring threat.
The Dragons Alexandra Sevastakis added a late goal at the 84th minute for Tiffin. The ‘Cats outshot the Dragons on net holding an 11-4 advantage. Tiffin held the edge on corners with an 11-3 mark.
Senior forward Chelsea Lyons contributed two assists on the afternoon and one shot on net.
NMU junior goalkeeper Jessica Baker faced four shots and made two saves on the afternoon. Lindsey Gallagher allowed five goals on 11 shots for Tiffin.
NMU returns home next weekend, hosting No. 5 Grand Valley State at 4 p.m. Friday (Oct. 14) and Ferris State at noon on Sunday (Oct. 16).
Game Notes: The five goals scored by the ‘Cats today are a season high. Freshman Tevun Sellers is now second in team scoring with five goals and 10 points. Today marked the final time that the ‘Cats will be on the road during the regular season. NMU plays its next five matches at home.
