MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 25 Northern Michigan volleyball finished off Family Weekend with a sweep of Tiffin University this afternoon (Oct. 8) 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-19).

With the win, the ‘Cats improve to 10-6 overall and 8-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Panthers fall to 4-12 overall and 4-6 in the GLIAC.

The ‘Cats controlled the entire first set, from start to finish.  NMU never trailed during the set, leading by as many as seven points, 18-11 after the mid-way point.  The Dragons were unable to trim into the NMU lead and a Sami Vierk service ace capped off the set for the ‘Cats.

The second set saw both teams trading points throughout much of the set before the ‘Cats broke free, taking a 17-15 lead and never looked back.  NMU went on to win eight of the next 10 points and finished the set with a kill and set combination from Sami Vierk and Abby Lovell.

NMU came out of the break with an early 5-2 lead in the third set before the Dragons made a rally to take their first lead of the match at 7-6.  That would prove to be the final time that Tiffin led during the match, as the ‘Cats took five straight points to take the lead at 11-7.  NMU held off a late Tiffin surge, to take the set and match.

The ‘Cats were led offensively by senior left-side hitter Emma Wolfe and sophomore left-side hitter Lina Lopes.  The two combined for 27 kills, with 15 and 12 respectively.  Junior setter Abby Lovell established the NMU threat with 33 assists.

Defensively, junior libero Kalin Zimmerman controlled the defensive front with 12 digs.  The ‘Cats collected six team blocks and limited the Dragons to a hitting percentage of just .118

The ‘Cats conclude their home stand at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 11) against rival Michigan Tech.
