MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan cross country team finished second at its home meet on Friday (Oct. 7) afternoon. Michigan Tech defeated the Wildcats by 15 points after having three runners finish at the top.
“We seemed a little bit slower today,” NMU coach Jenny Ryan said. “It might have been the heat but Michigan Tech does well at these small meets and Marissa ran very well for them. Chelsea finished strong for us, beating out Larissa at the end.”
Chelsea Farquhar led the ‘Cats in fourth-place with a time of 23:49.0. Larissa Halonen finished three seconds back in fifth and Mandy Dye (23:58.2) was sixth.
Marissa Yovetich won the race, finishing the 6-kilometer course in 23:15.9. Deedra Irwin was second and Christian Mishica was third for the Huskies.
Six other ‘Cats finished in the top 15 as Katie Granquist, Marie-Helen Soderman, Olivia Howard, Jordyn Ross, Rita Woitas and Nora Kiilunen finished in spots 10-15.
Olivia Juntila, Emily Allen, Felicia Gesior, Alicia Romano, Kelsey Noah, Alea Juntti, Brittany Loomis, Caitlin Keskey, Molly Burger, Rachael Williams, Abby Roche, Kristina Donley and Brianne Gerlach McDonald also raced for Northern.
Michigan Tech also won the men’s 8-kilometer race. Lake Superior State’s Taylor Heath and Mark List finished at the top but the Huskies had seven runners in places three through nine.
The Wildcats have two weeks to prepare for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship held on Oct. 22 in Ashland, Ohio.
