MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University cross country team hosts its lone meet of the season at 4 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 7) at the NMU Golf Course. The meet is the Upper Peninsula Championship and will have a women’s 6-kilometer race and a men’s 8-kilometer race.

Teams competing with the Wildcats at this year’s U.P. Championship are Michigan Tech, Lake Superior State, Gogebic and Finlandia.

Freshman Larissa Halonen has led the ‘Cats in two of the four meets this season. Senior Rita Woitas was the top runner at the Northland College Invite and senior Nora Kiilunen led the team at the U.P. Opener., Senior Olivia Juntila, sophomores Alicia Romano and Mandy Dye, redshirt freshmen Katie Granquist and freshmen Chelsea Farquhar and Olivia Howard will also battle for scoring position.

Northern has defeated Michigan Tech in 3-of-4 races this season. The lone Husky victory over the Wildcats was at the U.P. Opener when Tech won by one point. The ‘Cats have defeated Lake Superior State and Finlandia this season and have yet to race against Gogebic.

The women’s race is set to start at 4 p.m. with the men’s race at 4:45 p.m.
