Gold Wins Annual Intrasquad Swim Meet
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan swimming and diving team got the 2011-12 season started with its annual Green and Gold Meet from the PEIF Pool on Saturday (Oct. 1) morning. Gold won the meet defeating the Green behind strong performances from Deborah Lawrence, Emily Bourguignon and the divers.
“I thought today was great,” NMU head coach Heidi Voigt said. “We have so many freshmen and to see them finally race was fun. It’s good to see the girls feel some pressure and really get after it.”
Deborah Lawrence won the 200 individual medley for Gold and was second to Olga Budiansky of Green in the 100 breaststroke. Emily Bourguignon took home the 200 yard freestyle and was second in the 100 backstroke.
Gold divers Sophia Garris and Katie Lochart battled in the 1-meter. Garris won, defeating Lochart 155-147. Garris also garnered 20 points for the Gold squad, winning the 3-meter event.
Kesley Sipple had a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle and the Gold team took home the 400 freestyle relay.
For the Green team, Madisen Sechena, Emily Brennan, Jordan Iverson, Lauren Cockels, Olga Budiansky and Gaby Alzaga had first-place finishes along with the 200 medley relay and 500 yard freestyle teams.
“Madisen Sechena is kind of a hidden talent,” Voigt added. “She swam her best times so far this season.”
Sechena won the 100 butterfly, was third in the 200 individual medley and fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
Jordan Iverson led Green with two first-place finishes in the 1,000 and 500 yard freestyle. She also had a third-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly. Kayla Barr of Green was second to Iverson in the 1,000 and 500 freestyle.
Emily Brennan was first in the 100 freestyle, took second in the 200 yard individual medley and had a sixth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
Gaby Alzaga of Green was first in the 100 backstroke and second in the 200 freestyle. Lauren Cockels won the 50 yard freestyle and was second in the 100 butterfly for the Green squad.
NMU travels to Moorhead, Minnesota to take on St. Cloud State and Minnesota-Moorhead on Oct. 21 and 22.
“We have a big test on the road in a couple weeks,” Voigt added. “The girls are tired so we’ll give them some rest and get them ready for our trip to Minnesota.”
