MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan football team travels to Ohio to take on Ashland. NMU is 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Eagles are 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC. The all-time series falls in favor of Ashland 13-6. Last season NMU defeated Ashland 23-19 in the Superior Dome. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Jack Miller Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 24).
The Wildcats jumped into the American Football Coaches Association Top 25 poll, ranking No. 23. It’s the first time since 2009 that NMU has been ranked in the top 25. The other GLIAC school in the poll is No. 9 Wayne State. NMU hosts Wayne State on Oct. 1.
NMU kept its unbeaten record going with a 38-17 victory of Northwood last weekend. The offense racked up 566 yards of total offense and scored at least a touchdown in each quarter. The ‘Cats had less time of procession but used big plays to march down the field. Christian Jessie had a 91-yard touchdown reception, John Privitielli had a 19-yard TD run, Kyle Senn had a 43-yard touchdown reception, Julian Gaines had a 23-yard TD reception and Prince Young had a 1-yard TD run that was set up by a Jared Buss 31- yard reception.
NMU won its third game of the season in the meeting between the two schools in 2010 with a 23-19 win. Carter Kopach had two touchdown runs of over 40 yards and Jared Buss added a 5-yard run. The ‘Cats defense held the Eagles to four field goals and one touchdown.
NMU is averaging 33 points per game on 395 yards of offense. The ‘Cats are averaging 6.0 yards per play. The ‘Cats have scored five rushing touchdowns and six passing. NMU is 17-for-38 on third down conversion (45 percent). Senior Carter Kopach is 46-of-75 passing for 651 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. He is ranked fourth in the conference in passing efficiency (155.3) and 16th nationally. Kopach also has 229 yards rushing and one touchdown. He has thrown for 4,293 yards in his career for 37 touchdowns and ran 792 yards for 15 touchdowns. Prince Young leads the running backs with 209 yards averaging 69.7 per game. He has one touchdown. John Privitelli has rushed for 87 yards with two touchdowns. Christian Jessie has 256 yards on 16 receptions and three touchdowns. Christian Marble-King has nine catches for 86 yards. Julian Gaines has five catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
Zach Anderson leads the team with 26 total tackles (13 solo and 13 assisted). He has three sacks. Josh Droese has 22 tackles. Matt Forward has 17 and Eddie Knoblock has 15. Demetri Stewart, Zach Pierson and Robert Edmonds all have 14. Jacob Lehman and Anthony Marietti have two interceptions each.
Rockne Belmonte is 5-for-6 on field goal tries and has made 12-for-12 extra points. Garrett Peck is averaging 42 yards on nine punts. NMU leads the conference in average punt return yards at 15.4.
