ST. PAUL, Minn. – The No. 25 ranked Northern Michigan volleyball team rebounded from a disappointing early morning loss to sweep Pittsburgh State 3-0 this afternoon.

The ‘Cats won 25-19, 25-18, and 25-12 to improve to 1-1 on the young season.  NMU dropped their earlier contest today 3-0 to Southwest Minn. St.

NMU took control of the first set early, winning five of the match’s first six points.  The ‘Cats held off a late Gorilla charge to take the set 25-19.

The second set was close throughout, with Pittsburgh State leading the match at the mid-way point before Lina Lopes and Sami Vierk took over for the ‘Cats and led NMU to a 25-18 win.

The ‘Cats dominated the third and final set, winning five straight points in route to a match victory.

The ‘Cats were led by senior Emma Wolfe with a match best 17 kills.  Junior Sami Vierk and sophomore Lina Lopes combined for 23 kills.  Contributing to the attack was Abby Lovell, who chipped in 34 of the ‘Cats 46 assists.

Defensively, senior Becca Feuerherd led the front with eight digs.

The Gorillas were led by Morgan Voorhes with 11 kills and Katie Wright, who had 21 of the teams 28 assists.

NMU hit for .388 compared to Pittsburgh State’s .187.  Hitting improved greatly from the ‘Cats earlier match when they hit only .157.

NMU hits the court again tomorrow to conclude the Wildwood Lodge Volleyball Classic.  The ‘Cats take on Central Missouri at 12 p.m.  The Mules swept Wayne State (Neb.) earlier today 3-0.
